We are lost in love

You’ve decided on Queenstown. Now comes the part that catches most couples off guard: Choosing where to actually get married.

At first, it sounds simple. Find a beautiful location, book your date and you’re done. But then you start looking.

A mountain peak at sunrise. A hidden alpine lake. A quiet lakeside beach. A forest track. A helicopter landing on top of a ridgeline.

Suddenly, every location looks incredible, and making a decision feels harder than ever.

After planning and photographing more than 500 weddings and elopements across Queenstown and the wider Wakatipu Basin, we’ve learned something important.

The best wedding location isn’t necessarily the most famous one.

It’s the one that feels right for you.

The location that fits the kind of experience you want, the people you want around you, the season you’re getting married in and the way you want your wedding day to unfold.

This guide isn’t a list of Queenstown wedding locations. It’s a framework to help you choose the right one.

Why Queenstown Is One of the Best Places to Get Married in New Zealand

Queenstown is unique because there isn’t just one iconic wedding location.

There are dozens.

Within a relatively short drive, you can move between alpine lakes, mountain viewpoints, rivers, native bush, historic townships and remote wilderness.

You can exchange vows beside the water with your family nearby, and you can take a helicopter to a mountain summit.

You can spend the afternoon exploring hidden corners of the region or stay in one beautiful place and soak it all in.

That variety is what makes Queenstown so special. It also makes choosing harder.

Rather than scrolling through endless galleries, we encourage couples to start with a few key questions.

The answers will quickly narrow down which locations make the most sense for your day.

Question 1: Do You Want Guests There?

This is often the biggest factor in deciding on a wedding location.

If you’re planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you, almost every option is available. You can access remote locations, helicopter landings and places that simply wouldn’t work for a larger group.

If you’re inviting family and friends, accessibility becomes more important. You’ll need somewhere with enough space, easy access and a comfortable experience for everyone attending.

For larger guest lists, locations like Lake Hayes, Jacks Point and Coronet Peak often work beautifully. They provide incredible scenery while remaining practical for guests of different ages and mobility levels.

For couples choosing to elope with under 25 guests, the possibilities open up considerably. Remote alpine locations via helicopter, hidden lakes and helicopter-access summits become realistic options.

Neither approach is better.

It’s simply about deciding what kind of experience feels most meaningful to you.

Question 2: Are You Open to a Helicopter Wedding?

This question instantly divides Queenstown wedding locations into two completely different categories.

Ground-access locations offer incredible scenery without leaving the earth. Most are free to access, easy to reach and suitable for a wider range of wedding styles.

Helicopter-access locations create an entirely different experience.

You’re not simply visiting a beautiful place. You’re stepping into a landscape that most people will never see. Mountain summits, alpine tarns, remote ridgelines and glacier-carved valleys become accessible in minutes.

For many couples, the helicopter isn’t just transportation. It’s part of the adventure. For others, staying grounded feels more relaxed and aligned with how they want to experience their wedding day.

Neither option is right or wrong. The question is simply whether the adventure of reaching the location is part of the experience you want to create.

Question 3: What Type of Scenery Feels Most Like You?

One mistake couples often make is choosing the location they think they’re supposed to choose.

The most dramatic location isn’t always the best fit.

When we help couples choose a location, we often ask a simple question:

When you imagine looking back at your wedding photos in twenty years, what do you want to see?

For some couples, it’s mountains.

For others, it’s water.

Some are drawn to forests and rivers. Others love open landscapes, rugged terrain or snow-covered peaks.

Here are a few broad categories to think about.

Mountain Lovers

If dramatic alpine scenery makes your heart skip a beat, Queenstown has no shortage of options.

Whether it’s a mountain summit accessed by helicopter or a high-country viewpoint reached by road, these locations create that sense of scale and adventure Queenstown is famous for.

These are often the locations that feel wild, remote and unforgettable.

Lakeside Lovers

The lakes are the heart of Queenstown.

Calm water, mountain reflections and soft evening light create a completely different atmosphere from the rugged alpine environment above.

Lakeside ceremonies often feel intimate, peaceful and timeless.

They’re also some of the most versatile locations for couples wanting beautiful scenery without an extreme adventure.

Forest and River Lovers

Not everyone dreams of standing on top of a mountain.

Some couples feel more connected to places filled with greenery, native bush and flowing water.

These locations feel quieter, more sheltered and often more private.

They create a different mood entirely.

Snow and Winter Lovers

Winter transforms Queenstown.

Snow-covered peaks, icy blue tones and dramatic alpine conditions create some of the most striking wedding imagery imaginable.

For couples who love winter, embracing the season can result in an experience that feels completely unique.

Question 4: What Season Are You Getting Married In?

One of the best things about Queenstown is that every season offers something different.

Summer

Summer brings long days, warm temperatures and access to virtually every location across the region. The light lasts late into the evening, creating beautiful golden hour opportunities. It’s also the busiest time of year, which means some locations experience higher visitor numbers.

Autumn

Autumn is a favourite for many couples and photographers alike. The changing colours throughout Arrowtown and the surrounding valleys create some of the most beautiful landscapes of the year. The weather is often settled, the crowds begin to ease and the region takes on a warmth that’s hard to replicate in any other season.

Winter

Winter brings snow, dramatic mountain scenery and a completely different atmosphere. The landscape feels quieter and more dramatic. For adventurous couples, winter can create some of the most memorable wedding experiences Queenstown has to offer.

Spring

Spring sits beautifully between winter and summer. Snow remains on many mountain peaks while the valleys begin to turn green again. Wildflowers emerge, rivers are flowing strongly and the region feels fresh and full of energy.

Question 5: How Much Adventure Do You Want?

Some couples want their wedding day to feel like an adventure. Others want it to feel easy.

Most sit somewhere in between. There is no right answer.

You might love the idea of taking a helicopter to a mountain summit, and exploring multiple locations throughout the day. Or you might prefer a relaxed ceremony followed by champagne by the lake and dinner with your closest people.

The important thing is being honest about what actually sounds enjoyable to you.

The best wedding day isn’t the most adventurous one. It’s the one that feels natural.

Ground-Access vs Helicopter Wedding Locations

If you’re still deciding between the two, here’s the simplest way we think about it.

Ground-access locations are ideal for couples who value flexibility, simplicity and guest accessibility.

They offer incredible scenery, easier logistics and often more options for larger groups.

Helicopter locations are ideal for couples who want a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience and are comfortable embracing a little more spontaneity around weather and logistics.

Both create incredible wedding days.

They’re simply different experiences.

The Questions We Ask Every Couple

Before recommending locations, we usually ask couples:

Who do you want there?

What season are you getting married in?

Do you want a helicopter experience?

What type of scenery are you drawn to?

How adventurous do you want the day to feel?

What moments matter most to you?

The answers tell us far more than any Pinterest board ever could. Because choosing a wedding location isn’t really about choosing a view.

It’s about choosing how you want to feel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Queenstown Wedding Locations

What is the best wedding location in Queenstown?

There isn’t one best location. The right location depends on your guest count, season, budget and the type of experience you want to create.

Can you get married in public locations around Queenstown?

Yes, many popular locations are on public land, although permits may be required depending on the location and the size of your wedding.

What is the best season to get married in Queenstown?

Every season offers something unique. Summer provides long days and accessibility, autumn brings incredible colours, winter offers snow-covered landscapes and spring combines snowy peaks with fresh greenery.

Are helicopter weddings worth it?

For couples wanting privacy, adventure and truly unique scenery, helicopter weddings can be one of the most memorable experiences available in Queenstown.

Can I bring guests to a helicopter wedding location?

Absolutely. While helicopter weddings are often associated with elopements, many locations can accommodate guests too.

With enough notice, typically 6 to 12 months, we can arrange multiple helicopters to transport your family and friends to the ceremony location. Most helicopters seat between 6 and 9 passengers, making guest counts of around 20 to 25 people entirely possible.

Children are welcome too. Young children can often sit on a parent’s knee during the flight, although policies vary between operators.

If you’re bringing young children but still want some uninterrupted time together for your couples photos, we usually recommend inviting a grandparent, trusted friend or babysitter along. That way, you can fully enjoy the experience while knowing your little ones are well looked after.

We’ll guide you through all the logistics and help determine whether a helicopter-access location is the right fit for your guest numbers and wedding plans.

How We Help Couples Choose

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding locations is that the location itself creates the experience.

In reality, the experience comes from how the day is designed around you.

We’ve photographed couples at the exact same location who had completely different experiences.

The difference wasn’t the view.It was the way the day flowed.

The timing, the pace, the people involved and the moments built between the big events.

That’s why we don’t simply recommend locations.

We help create wedding days that feel personal, meaningful and effortless from beginning to end.

The location is just one piece of the story.
